Light tech skin treatments

Sun damage, uneven texture, and unwanted hair are three common skin concerns patients bring to Kalos Medical Spa, and light-based treatments can address all three. IPL, ResurFX, erbium laser resurfacing, CO₂ laser resurfacing, and laser hair removal, however, work in different ways, treat different concerns, and involve different recovery timelines.

Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Emily Kirby oversees our light-based protocols offered at Kalos Medical Spa. Here, we compare each technology and what you should know before your consultation to develop a treatment plan.

What “Light-Based Treatment” Actually Means

Light-based treatments use targeted energy to affect specific tissues beneath the skin without damaging the surrounding area, a dermatological process called selective photothermolysis. Intense pulsed light, or IPL, delivers a broad spectrum of light wavelengths in a single pulse.

Laser devices deliver one precise wavelength, which allows a laser to target a specific structure, such as a hair follicle or a layer of damaged tissue, with greater accuracy. You can think of the laser focusing on a specific color. Lasers themselves divide further into non-ablative and ablative categories: non-ablative lasers, such as ResurFX, heat tissue beneath the surface while leaving surface skin cells intact, while ablative lasers, such as CO₂ and Erbium, remove a controlled portion of the outer tissue to trigger youthifying renewal. This distinction is the reason IPL, ResurFX, erbium laser resurfacing, CO₂ laser resurfacing, and laser hair removal are not interchangeable, even though we often group them together as “laser treatments.”

IPL Photofacial: Treats Sun Damage and Pigment

IPL photofacial targets sun damage, age spots, and spider veins by directing broad-spectrum light at pigment and small blood vessels beneath the skin’s surface. The tissue absorbs the light as heat, which causes the body to gradually “clean up” the damaged pigment or vessel over the following weeks.

IPL works best for patients with sun damage, redness, or pigment concerns rather than pronounced texture or wrinkles. This means that our team often pairs IPL with a texture-focused treatment for patients addressing more than one concern. Recovery involves little-to-no downtime.

ResurFX Non-Ablative Laser: Renews Texture With Minimal Downtime

ResurFX is a non-ablative fractional laser that treats fine lines and wrinkles, age spots and freckles, stretch marks, acne and surgical scars, and lax skin on the face and body. Rather than removing skin layers, ResurFX passes heat and light energy through skin cells while leaving them intact, which stimulates the skin’s own repair process without creating an open wound.

A ResurFX session takes 15 to 30 minutes following application of a topical numbing and cooling gel, and most patients resume daily activities immediately afterward. Our team typically schedules 3 to 4 ResurFX sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, making it the option for patients whose texture concerns don’t require the deeper, more intensive approach of CO₂ resurfacing.

Erbium Laser Resurfacing: Ablative Renewal With a Fast Healing Process

Erbium laser resurfacing is an ablative laser treatment, meaning it removes a precise portion of the outer tissue to encourage new tissue growth beneath it. Erbium works well for fine-to-moderate wrinkles, sun damage, shallow acne scars, and uneven pigmentation.

What sets erbium apart from CO₂ is how it vaporizes the outer tissue. Erbium produces less heat damage to the surrounding tissue than CO₂, which typically allows for faster healing, but with slightly less dramatic results than CO₂. For patients with fine-to-moderate concerns who want similar results of ablative resurfacing without the longer recovery, erbium may be a good fit.

CO₂ Laser Skin Resurfacing: Renews Skin Texture

CO₂ laser skin resurfacing uses precise, controlled pulses of laser energy to remove a precise portion of damaged outer tissue and stimulate new tissue growth underneath. CO₂ laser resurfacing is a leading treatment for facial wrinkles, acne scarring, and severe photodamage.

Because CO₂ resurfacing treats deeper tissue than IPL and other lasers, recovery involves several days of downtime, and patients should expect visible redness and peeling as new tissue develops. Results continue to improve for months after treatment.

Laser Hair Removal: Reduces Unwanted Hair Long-Term

Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy to target the pigment in hair follicles in actively growing hair, which disables the follicle’s ability to regrow hair. Kalos specialists perform laser hair removal on the face and body for both women and men. Patients need a series of sessions to treat hair across its full growth cycle. There is little-to-no downtime needed after treatment.

Since laser hair procedures only treat actively growing hair follicles, dormant hair follicles are not affected. With the body’s natural hair cycle, dormant hair will enter an active growth phase at some point, at which time additional treatment may be desired. This is why no laser or IPL device carries FDA clearance for “permanent hair removal.”

Which Treatment Fits Your Skin Concerns?

  • Pigment or sun damage on the face, chest, or hands: IPL photofacial targets pigment and vessels with little-to-no downtime.
  • Mild-to-moderate texture, fine lines, or scarring without time for recovery: ResurFX non-ablative laser renews tissue without removing skin layers.
  • Fine-to-moderate wrinkles, sun damage, or shallow acne scars with a shorter recovery than CO₂: Erbium Laser Resurfacing offers ablative renewal with a fast healing process.
  • Pronounced texture, acne scarring, or deeper photodamage: CO₂ Laser Skin Resurfacing renews tissue at a deeper level, with a longer recovery, and more dramatic, long-lasting results.
  • Unwanted hair on the face or body: Laser Hair Removal reduces regrowth over a series of sessions.

Many patients choose more than one of these treatments over time as part of a personalized plan our team builds around specific tissue and goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

IPL treats surface pigment and vessels with minimal downtime, while CO₂ resurfacing treats deeper texture concerns and involves more recovery. A consultation with a Kalos specialist will clarify which tissue-level concern is present.

ResurFX is non-ablative, meaning it heats tissue without removing any skin layers, so most patients resume normal activities the same day. CO₂ resurfacing is ablative and removes a portion of the outer tissue, which produces more dramatic results for severe concerns but requires several days of downtime. Dr. Kirby’s team helps patients decide based on how deep the concern sits and how much recovery time they can accommodate.

Erbium and CO₂ each remove a portion of the outer tissue to trigger renewal, so they are both considered ablative treatments. Erbium produces less heat damage to the surrounding tissue, which typically means a faster healing process than CO₂, however CO₂ laser resurfacing typically has more noticeable results. Dr. Kirby’s team determines which depth of treatment matches your specific concern during consultation.

Most patients describe the sensation as a brief, warm snap against the skin. Kalos specialists adjust settings for tissue type and treatment area, and we have options available for patients who want additional comfort during treatment.

Because Kalos is a physician-supervised medical spa, patients have access to prescription topical numbing cream and Pro-Nox. Pro-Nox is an inhaled nitrous oxide system, commonly known as “laughing gas,” that provides fast-acting relief during a procedure and clears out of the system within minutes afterward. Your specialist will recommend which option, if any, is appropriate based on the treatment and your preferences.

Session counts vary by treatment, tissue type, and goals. Dr. Kirby’s team determines a specific plan at consultation rather than applying a standard number to every patient.
