Why Does Laser Hair Removal Take Multiple Sessions? Understanding the Hair Growth Cycle
If you are looking into laser hair removal, you have probably noticed that every practitioner recommends a series of treatments rather than a single session. This raises a reasonable question: if the laser destroys the hair follicle, why does it take four to seven sessions to get rid of unwanted hair? The answer lies in the biology of how hair grows.
How Laser Hair Removal Works
Laser hair removal targets the pigment (melanin) inside each hair follicle. When the laser’s energy is absorbed by the melanin, it converts to heat and damages the follicle’s ability to produce new hair. Over time, the treated follicle can no longer sustain hair growth.
However, this process only works when the hair is actively connected to the follicle, which is not always the case. At any given moment, the hairs on your body are in different stages of their growth cycle, and only some of them are in the right active phase for laser treatment to be effective.
The Three Phases of Hair Growth
Every hair on your body cycles through three distinct phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen.
Anagen: The Active Growth Phase
During the anagen phase, the hair is actively growing and remains firmly attached to the follicle. This is the only phase during which laser hair removal is effective. The hair shaft contains melanin and is connected to the blood supply that nourishes the follicle, so when the laser targets the hair, the heat energy travels down to damage the follicle itself.
Only about 20% to 30% of your hair is in the anagen phase at any given time. The rest of your hair follicles are taking a break.
Catagen: The Transition Phase
The catagen phase is a brief transitional period during which the hair stops growing and detaches from the follicle. The hair is still present, but it is no longer connected to the structures that laser treatment needs to reach. Treating hair in this phase will not produce lasting results because the follicle is not affected.
Telogen: The Resting Phase
During the telogen phase, the hair follicle is dormant. The old hair eventually sheds, and the follicle rests before a new anagen hair growth phase begins. Hair in this phase is either loosely held in place or already falling out on its own. Laser treatment during telogen does not effectively damage the follicle because there is no active hair to conduct the energy.

Why Timing and Consistency Matter
Because only a fraction of your hair is in the anagen phase during any single session, laser hair removal requires multiple treatments spaced strategically over time. Each session targets a new group of hairs that have entered their active growth phase since your last appointment.
At Kalos Medical Spa, sessions are typically scheduled four to six weeks apart, depending on the area treated. This timing is designed to catch as many follicles as possible during anagen while allowing your skin to recover between treatments.
Only about 20% to 30% of your hair is in the anagen phase at any given time, so multiple sessions are necessary for lasting results.
This is why consistency is important. Skipping sessions or waiting too long between appointments can allow hairs to cycle through anagen untreated, which may extend your overall treatment timeline. Staying on schedule helps you make progress with each visit.
It is also worth noting that different areas of the body have different growth cycles. Facial hair, for example, tends to cycle faster than leg hair, so your specialist may recommend a slightly different schedule depending on the area being treated.
What to Expect as You Progress Through Treatment
Laser hair removal results are gradual, and knowing what to expect can help you stay encouraged throughout the process.
- After each session: You may notice that treated hairs do not fall out immediately. Over the following one to two weeks, the damaged hairs will shed on their own. This is sometimes mistaken for new growth, but it is actually the treated hair being pushed out of the follicle.
- Midway through your series: Many patients begin to notice that hair grows back thinner, lighter, and patchier. Some areas may appear nearly hair-free while others still have visible growth. This is completely normal. It simply reflects which follicles were in anagen growth during your previous sessions.
- Toward the end of treatment: With each session, fewer and fewer hairs return. Most patients see significant, lasting reduction after completing their recommended series.
If certain hairs seem stubborn, it is usually because they were in the catagen or telogen phase during earlier treatments and are only now being addressed.
Factors That Can Affect Your Results
While the hair growth cycle is the primary reason multiple sessions are necessary, a few other factors can influence how your body responds to laser hair removal.
Hair color and skin tone
Laser hair removal works best when there is strong contrast between the hair pigment and the surrounding skin. Dark hair on lighter skin responds especially well. However, advances in laser technology have made treatment safer and more effective for a broader range of skin tones. At Kalos, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro, which features dual wavelengths that allow our specialists to customize treatment for different skin types.
Hormonal influences
Hormones play a significant role in hair growth. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), menopause, and certain medications can stimulate hair growth or cause dormant follicles to become active. If you have a hormonal condition that affects hair growth, your specialist can help you understand what to expect and whether additional sessions may be beneficial.
Why Some People Need Maintenance Sessions
Even after completing a full series of treatments, some patients notice occasional hair regrowth over time. This does not mean the treatment failed, but is simply a reflection of how the body works.
Hormonal fluctuations, aging, and other factors can activate follicles that were dormant during your original treatment series. For most people, maintenance sessions are infrequent, perhaps once or twice a year, and are quick and easy since far fewer hairs need to be addressed.
