In summer, our skin tends to retain more moisture due to the humidity, and the products we use are often lightweight. However, the air has less moisture as fall transitions into winter, and our skin can become dry and even flaky. The solution? Adjust your skincare to support your skin during the cooler, drier climate!

To help you make this seasonal skincare swap, the aesthetic professionals at Kalos Medical Spa share how you can curate a season-appropriate skincare routine.

Keep SPF in your routine

While the sun may seem less potent during fall and winter, UVA and UVB rays can still cause skin damage, even on overcast days. Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher daily protects your skin year-round.

Add moisturizing products

Swap lightweight moisturizers for more nourishing products, or consider adding a hydrating toner or serum to lock in moisture. Products with hyaluronic acid and ceramides are good options for added moisture.

Another approach to supporting your skin during sweater weather is “slugging,” which involves using an occlusive layer of skincare to seal in moisture. Slugging helps limit transepidermal water loss (TEWL), when water evaporates from the skin’s surface. This is especially helpful in drier weather conditions and may increase the efficacy of your evening skincare products since the protective layer prevents transfer.

Many patients use a heavier PM moisturizer or petroleum-based products for this technique. Note: If you notice that only parts of your skin are prone to dryness and irritation, such as the lips, eyelids, hands, and around the nose, you can apply the extra layer to only those areas. Slugging may not be beneficial for oily skin types.

Remember to exfoliate

Exfoliating your skin removes dead skin cells and other debris and primes your skin for better absorption of skincare products. We recommend exfoliating your face and body 1-2 times a week to help you keep the glow you enjoyed during warmer months. Over-exfoliation can strip your skin of its natural oils and compromise your skin’s protective barrier, so it is important not to overdo it and to moisturize immediately after you use an exfoliator

Schedule professional skincare treatments

To kickstart your fall refresh, we recommend Hydrafacial MD. This all-in-one treatment extracts, exfoliates, and hydrates your skin using a steady stream of serum-infused water and comfortable suction. And because Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Emily J. Kirby oversees our medical spa, patients can choose a personalized, medical-grade booster to target specific skin concerns, such as fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots and redness, or skin texture and tone.

Your skin will benefit from professional skincare products and services year-round; however, many patients take advantage of reduced sun exposure to schedule their favorite resurfacing treatments. These treatments can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so the cooler months when the days are shorter make recovery and aftercare more convenient. Some of the most popular treatment options include:
